1. What are standard print sizes and how much should I expect to pay?
Standard print sizes are 4x6, 5x7, 8x12, and 11x14. Many, but not all, images can be
cropped to 8x10. Larger print sizes are available and can be quoted based on quantity.
Machine prints from film and standard digital prints are made using automated systems
that often work well, but can fall short of optimum quality. Custom and Cibachrome prints are hand-finished prints that provide the best quality for framed enlargements or for reproduction.

This can vary greatly. Photo shoots are done either at our standard rate or as a buyout.
They also can be shot as digital or as film. The decision to shoot an assignment as film or
Digital, or to do it as a buyout or standard rate is made jointly with the client. These decisions are important and are made in an effort to maximize resources and emphasize quality of end product. Photo shoots can range from as little as $60.00 to thousands of dollars depending on complexity of the assignment.

View our Services3. What is a buyout and when would I want one?
Buyouts grant the client rights to reproduce images from assigned photo shoots in any
current or future projects. They may not transfer reproduction rights to other departments or organizations. Clients who pay for an assignment at our standard rates have the right to
debut the images in a particular publication or website. Reproduction rights for later
projects would be purchased at stock photography rates. Buyouts are good when clients
would like to have the most flexibility with images that have been created for them.
4. What is a “use fee”?
Use fees are paid for images that exist as stock images and can be used for reproduction
on the web and in print. Use fees for stock photos are charged as a one-time fee for the
intended use, and the fee buys the rights to reproduce the image one time only.
5. Who owns the images from the photo shoot I underwrote?
Clients have the right to debut the images created for them. In other words, they have “first time rights”. After the image has been published, their rights have been exercised. The ownership of the original work resides with Duke Photography, and the office retains the copyright to all works its staff produces. Clients are not allowed to distribute, sell, or share any images produced by this office unless negotiated beforehand.
6. When will my work be ready?
Most assignments and print orders will be ready in three to five working days after the
Shoot, or after the production order has been placed. In rare situations work can take a little longer, but clients will be notified if that might be the case. Rush service is available and can be purchased based on the deadline or timeframe.
7. Are there restrictions for use of images from a buyout?
There are a few restrictions for the use of an image if it is purchased through a buyout.
Buyout images can be used in any current or future project but may not be shared for
reproduction by other departments or organizations. If purchased through our standard
rate plan, then the image can only be used once in a specific project or publication. If used in other publications, either print or web, a new use fee will be required. All photographs must be credited to Duke Photography.
8. How do I schedule a photo shoot?
Clients within the University and Medical Center can use our website’s “Photo Assignment Request” feature to schedule a photo shoot. Anyone, including those outside the University and Medical Center, can contact us by email or phone, and set up an appointment to discuss a project. All consultation is free of charge and allows the client and the photographer to maximize their resources.
